'There is a crack in everything. That is how the light gets in.' by Evgenia Greene

“There is a crack in everything. That is how the light gets in.” (c) Leonard Cohen

'I chose these lines of the Leonard Cohen song "Anthem" as the title of my work. The words truly reflect my feelings that the very notion of perfection is misleading, whereas imperfection carries great value for growth, making one stronger.

The heroine goes down a path from a point of high emotional tension, standing on the verge of the abyss, to finding inner strength, balance, freedom and confidence. Her path is full of struggle, trials, suffering and experiences, and through self-reflection, she comes to the light.

This idea was also inspired by the poetry of the Silver Age symbolists. In their works, the symbolists tried to depict the life of each soul - full of experiences, vague moods, subtle feelings and fleeting impressions. A symbol contains the potential of the unlimited, unbounded emergence of meaning. As the Russian poet, F.K. Sologub wrote - "The symbol is a window to infinity".'
